About
From Wikipedia:
To grok (pronounced /ˈgrɒk/) is to share the same reality or line of thinking with another physical or conceptual entity.
Welcome to Grok Play, the game design blog of Jason Grlicky. I decided to create this site after reading about the concept of a “game journal” in the great book Game Design Workshop, by Tracy Fullerton. Tracy suggests keeping a journal in which you analyze gameplay experiences in order to increase your familiarity with the techniques used to create meaningful play. Basically, write down your analysis of what you play so you can grok what makes it work (or not work!).
My intention with this site is to share bits of my game journal with you, in hopes of starting discussions about games and game design (or even inspiring you to start a game journal of your own).
But enough about you, let’s talk about me! By day I’m a web developer at Vidoop who lives in sunny Tulsa, Oklahoma Portland, Oregon. By night I’m a game developer wannabe who loves geeking out about music, design, and technology. On Twitter you can look me up under @maxheadwound or on Identi.ca as @jason.
